Suzanne Rempp is a California-based abstract artist whose work explores the tension between spontaneity and restraint. Working intuitively through layers of paint, charcoal, scraping, veiling and gestural mark-making, she builds surfaces that reveal traces of what came before.
Originally an oil painter, Suzanne gradually moved toward abstraction, drawn to the freedom of creating without a predetermined image. Her current work is rooted in process—adding, obscuring, removing and rediscovering marks until a composition begins to emerge.
Using a restrained palette of atmospheric neutrals, muted color and occasional areas of deeper contrast, Suzanne creates paintings that feel both quiet and expressive. Lines appear and disappear, imperfect edges remain visible, and earlier layers are allowed to show through. Rather than resolving every element, she is interested in the balance between what is revealed and what is left unfinished.
Her recent body of work represents a continuing exploration of depth, movement and the beauty of imperfection. Each painting develops through an ongoing conversation between intention and chance, allowing the history of its making to remain part of the finished work.
